The Paralyzed Rescued Dog, Notorious, and His Blind Friend, Shady, Show that Rescued Pets Are Worth It

Cheyeanne Murphy firmly believes that her dogs have not literally saved her life, but they have definitely rescued her from heading down a dark path and have made her life much more meaningful.

About a decade ago, Cheyeanne’s mother passed away. She was a young and seemingly healthy woman, but one day she found out that she had cancer and a few months later, she was gone.

“When my mom was diagnosed, I was definitely on a different path in life,” Cheyeanne recalls. “I had a business where I was working endless hours. I was living someone else’s dream, not my own, and I thought I had to do it because that’s what I grew up believing I should do with my life – make money. But when my mom got diagnosed with cancer, I realized that life can change in an instant. There’s no guarantee of any amount of time. You don’t really have anything guaranteed to you.

Continuing on, Cheyeanne expresses that some may find it appalling, but she always maintains that her mother’s death was both the best and worst thing that ever happened to her. It forced her to confront the present at a young age.
With the support of her beloved dogs – Cash, who is no longer with her, and later Notorious and Shady – Cheyeanne managed to escape the depths of despair and began rediscovering the true meaning of living.
Her journey involved making significant changes in her life. She switched careers, relocated, and ended a long-term relationship. Throughout an entire year, she focused on unraveling her identity and determining her desires and aspirations. Her ultimate goal was to find happiness for herself and bring joy to others. Cheyeanne firmly believes, with unwavering certainty, that this objective is attainable.

first meeting with Notorious.
Notorious became a member of Cheyeanne’s family in a truly unique and heartwarming way. It all began when her sister shared a Facebook post featuring a little dog who instantly captured Cheyeanne’s affection. This adorable pup, not even a year old, was frolicking in the snow, completely unfazed by her disability. With no use of her back legs, she was still managing to do flips and circles, emitting the cutest high-pitched squeal. Cheyeanne couldn’t help but be smitten by the dog’s incredible spirit and lively personality.

However, being unfamiliar with special needs animals, Cheyeanne initially had reservations about adopting Notorious. She knew that taking care of a pet with limited mobility and bladder control would require extra effort and dedication. Nevertheless, her heart was set on this resilient little pup, and she couldn’t shake off the feeling of deep connection.

Despite her concerns, Cheyeanne decided to apply for adoption, taking a leap of faith. Months later, the moment finally arrived for her to meet Notorious for the first time, and it was a truly life-changing experience.

In Spokane, WA, there is a new addition to the family – a dog named Notorious. It has been eight years since Notorious came into their lives, but she still remains happy and full of energy. Despite being around nine or ten years old, she even participates in 5K runs using her wheelchair.

Cheyeanne, the owner, describes the fearless nature of Notorious. Once off the leash, she eagerly races down the hill without a care in the world. Cheyeanne simply follows her lead, amazed at her spirit. Notorious is completely unaware of her disability, and Cheyeanne finds no need to remind her.

Another dog named Shady entered Cheyeanne’s life, but their connection was different. Normally, it takes time for shelter pets to adjust to new owners and surroundings. However, Shady was a unique case. She immediately trusted and loved everyone, including Cheyeanne. Initially, Cheyeanne was looking to adopt another “unadoptable” rescue, so Shady did not seem like the perfect fit.

Cheyeanne was instantly smitten with Shady’s adorable nature. She was affectionate, constantly wagging her little white tail. Cheyeanne even told the rescue center that there was no need for her to adopt this dog, as Shady would undoubtedly find a loving home. Surprisingly, they informed Cheyeanne that Shady was considered a special needs dog and might be harder to find a home for, as people often preferred animals with some sort of purpose.

Shady, a dog with a difficult past, found herself in the care of a veterinarian after a car accident resulted in the loss of both her eyes. Despite the veterinarians’ attempts to reattach the eyes, only one was successful, leaving Shady with limited vision. Adding to her challenges, Shady was also considered a senior dog, which decreased her chances of being adopted. However, Cheyeanne saw the potential in Shady and decided to give her a forever home.

Cheyeanne’s decision to adopt Shady has proven to be a delightful experience. Shady has effortlessly adapted to her new surroundings, impressing Cheyeanne with her easygoing nature. This resilient canine has a heart full of love for everyone she encounters; whether it be men, women, children, dogs, or even cats, Shady embraces them all with open paws. She truly is a social chameleon, effortlessly winning the hearts of everybody she meets.

Cheyeanne has always had a deep connection to music, so it only made sense for her to name her beloved dogs after iconic musicians. With Cash, Notorious, and Shady, she pays homage to Johnny Cash, The Notorious B.I.G., and Eminem respectively. These talented artists have not only inspired her, but they have also provided comfort during her toughest moments. Music has served as a constant companion, reminding her that she is not alone in her struggles.

For Cheyeanne, naming her dogs after music legends was a way to instill a sense of greatness in them from the very beginning. She believed that it doesn’t matter where they come from or what challenges they face, what truly matters is how they make their mark in this world.

As these senior dogs enter the later chapters of their lives, they continue to bring joy and purpose to Cheyeanne’s existence. Their presence has had a profound impact not only on her, but also on the lives of those around them. However, owning rescue dogs with disabilities has not been without its difficulties.

Notorious often deals with bladder control issues, leading to accidents on the floor. Shady, on the other hand, requires constant supervision, particularly when around water, as she easily loses her sense of direction. Finding reliable dog-sitters while Cheyeanne is away has proven to be a challenge due to the special care these two require.

Despite the obstacles, Cheyeanne remains dedicated to providing the best care for her furry companions. Their disabilities may present challenges, but she is determined to give them a fulfilling and enjoyable life. In return, these remarkable dogs have become symbols of hope and resilience, inspiring all those who come into contact with them.

However, amidst the difficulties, there are definitely some advantageous aspects that outweigh the challenges, including some minor details that may not have crossed your mind. Cheyeanne expresses her delight, noting that these dogs are unable to leap onto furniture, which she finds truly remarkable.

Cheyeanne has always had Notorious and Shady accompanying her on numerous exciting escapades in the great outdoors. Together, they relish activities like paddleboarding, hiking, participating in 5k races (and even pushing it to 10k) – with Shady comfortably nestled in a backpack – and much more. These furry companions take immense pleasure in observing wildlife and enthusiastically greeting new acquaintances along the way.

Above all, Cheyeanne finds solace and inspiration in her lovely dogs, Notorious and Shady, as they remind her of the value of life and the significance of small moments of happiness. Witnessing their joyful and contented existence each day has helped pull her out of a gloomy headspace. Instead of dwelling on self-pity, she focuses on her canine companions who possess every reason to despise the world and harbor resentment towards people, yet they choose not to. This attitude serves as a profound source of motivation for her.

In sharing her experience, Cheyeanne aspires to encourage others to consider adopting rescue pets, particularly senior animals or those with disabilities. Despite the additional effort and dedication they may require, she firmly believes that investing in them is unquestionably worthwhile. By granting them a chance, she assures that it will ultimately enhance one’s own life in countless ways.
