On November 28, a remarkable puppy named Sasha reached a significant milestone – her 12-week birthday. While most puppies may not think much of this age, Sasha’s journey has been anything but ordinary. Born with hydrocephalus, a cleft lip, and a cleft palate, every day is a precious gift for her.
From the moment she entered the world, Sasha has received expert care from Marie DeMarco, a dedicated rescuer who focuses on helping special needs cats. DeMarco is the heart and soul behind FURRR 911, an organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and finding loving homes for felines in need.
DeMarco’s passion lies in providing support for cats who are ill, injured, or require special attention, including bottle-feeding orphaned kittens. She sees these circumstances as unique and beautiful in their imperfections, affectionately labeling them as “perfectly flawed.”
Sasha’s journey is a testament to resilience, love, and the power of compassionate care. With DeMarco’s unwavering commitment, this special puppy continues to thrive against all odds. Celebrating her 12 weeks of existence is a reminder of the value and joy Sasha brings to the world.
Upon encountering Sasha, the narrator instantly sensed that this adorable little canine would effortlessly assimilate into their life, disregarding her status as a mere dog. Expressing her admiration for Sasha’s indomitable spirit, the narrator, DeMarco, shared on Facebook how this courageous pup managed to conquer numerous obstacles despite her young age. DeMarco heartfeltly admitted to feeling overwhelmed with concern and anxiety as Sasha’s foster parent, sacrificing countless nights of sleep and quite possibly a few strands of hair turning grey. However, none of these concerns held much significance when gazing into Sasha’s captivating eyes.
After bravely battling a dreadful illness, the adorable little puppy now tips the scales at just over two pounds, which is definitely a cause for celebration. It’s quite common for cleft palate puppies like Sasha to catch upper respiratory infections, and unfortunately, she was not spared from this common ailment.
During her illness, Sasha experienced a fever, stuffy nose, vomiting, an infected eye, and the worst part – she started losing weight. Considering she was already a mere pound, every ounce counted!
DeMarco, Sasha’s caretaker, grew increasingly worried when the antibiotic treatment didn’t seem to do much for her. Although her temperature had returned to normal, she was still very weak, unsteady on her feet, and showed no enthusiasm for her meals.
DeMarco brought Sasha back to her neurologist, concerned that her issues may be attributed to hydrocephalus. Following the specialist’s guidance and implementing a strict regimen of medications, fluids, and tube feedings, Sasha began to show signs of improvement. When she reached her 12th week milestone, she had fully regained her spirited and affectionate nature.
According to DeMarco, who is likely to become Sasha’s permanent owner after being her foster parent, Sasha is an exceptionally tranquil and composed puppy. She has a fondness for sitting beside or even on my foot, exhibiting behavior that sets her apart from the typical puppy.
In addition to her fondness for cuddling with her feline companions and other rescues, even if they are larger than her, Sasha’s journey ahead is challenging and full of uncertainty. However, she is fortunate to be surrounded by an immense amount of love, dedication, and support.
Sasha’s story is truly inspiring, as she has proven to be a resilient fighter despite her congenital defects and medical condition. Her determination to embrace life is truly commendable.
For those who are captivated by Sasha’s charm, you can stay up-to-date with her progress on Facebook and contribute to her care by visiting the FURRR 911 website.
Sadly, Sasha passed away in March 2018, shortly after celebrating her sixth month of life. However, she left an indelible mark of love and joy on her human, canine, and feline friends throughout her brief time on Earth. To honor her memory, FURRR 911 continues to rescue other cleft-palate puppies.
